The introduction of savoury snacks is a normal part of a child’s development process.  But, what is the correct age to introduce savoury snacks into a child’s life?

The average child has their full set of 20 primary teeth by the age of three years old.  Children under 3 years old do not have the teeth to be able to chew food properly and grind it in their mouth.  It is important that children have their primary teeth before they begin to chew hard pieces of food as their windpipe or trachea is approximately the size of a drinking straw in diameter.

Care should be taken as roasted broad beans are small in size and require chewing.  They are not recommended for children under 3 years of age

G6PD deficiency is a genetic disorder in which the body doesn’t have enough of an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD).  The lack of G6PD can lead to red blood cells breaking down too easily when the person is exposed to certain triggers including FAVA beans. Signs and symptoms of G6PD deficiency can include: pale skin (pallor), persistent and/or severe tiredness, dark coloured urine, jaundice (yellow skin or eyes).  For more information, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.
